Requirements for an alarm system

In an emergency, every second counts. When it comes to protecting life and property, there is no room for compromise. That’s why the main requirements for an alarm solution are speed, availability and reliability. This means that alarms must be transmitted immediately to the right people, often simultaneously to a large number of emergency services. The alarm network must ensure the highest possible radio coverage – in remote outdoor areas as well as in cellars and underground car parks. In addition, the networks must be highly available so that alarms can be triggered and communication can take place even in the event of a power failure or when a power line is connected. We have the solution to all of these requirements.

Complementing LTE, TETRA and P25

Mission critical applications required on a public safety communication infrastructure that are fault and disaster tolerant need an availability of more than 99’999%. This availability is hard to achieve with one system only. However, it can easily be reached with two or three highly available systems working in parallel with mutual fall-back plans. Other than TETRA/P25 and LTE, paging systems achieve a very high reliability with relatively low investment costs. As a complement to TETRA/P25 and LTE, paging allows to reach the required availability of a public safety communications infrastructure – without the necessity to harden the TETRA/P25 and LTE infrastructure. It may seem counter-intuitive, but it is true: Several networks are more cost effective than a single one.

Our customers prepare for incidents in the most professional way. Swissphone’s solutions help make incident management processes ever more reliable. From detecting and reporting the incident, to managing the alerts, as well as finding and mobilising the right responders that can help mitigate its consequences. If technical alarms are involved, the alarm management can take place onsite or in the cloud; if emergency call solutions are involved, our solutions enable outdoor and indoor localisation. If blue light vehicles are involved, our solutions involve vehicle communication and field communication. Our software solutions allow you to gather feedback and document the incident management. All of our solutions combine self-reliant alerting systems for highest reliability, with cloud- and app-based solutions enabling additional efficiency gains.

Disaster proven

Alerting networks must be fail-proof in order to guarantee operation even in times of a crisis or blackout. Swissphone’s networks provide independence from third party systems and various fallback levels. System monitoring detects if and when a system component fails. The designated redundancy or fallback level automatically comes into effect and the malfunction is immediately reported to the system administrator. The backup power supply of all important system elements must be guaranteed as well. This system architecture guarantees self-reliant alerting and communication with your users, even when the public networks and infrastructures are unavailable.

Lowest total cost of ownership (TCO)

In times of scarce resources of public and private funds, alerting solutions are chosen based on the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO). Swissphone’s alerting solutions based on the open POCSAG standard provide the lowest TCO. Swissphone’s on-site and wide area network components are backwards compatible. This means you can add new components to old network paging systems easily without having to upgrade the system, thereby protecting and prolonging your initial investment. Also, they provide a mean time between failure of 7.4 years, reducing maintenance and repair costs. Many of Swissphone’s 300+ networks have been operating for more than 25 years without any failure.

Hampshire FRS replaces pager.

As a long-standing customer, Hampshire FRS turned to PageOne Communications to help replace existing alerters embedded in the organisation over 12 years ago. Hampshire knew they needed to invest in more modern alerters to better mobilise staff and improve their call-out procedure due to geographical and transmission issues. With simple tone, flash and vibrate devices used extensively by the Fire Service, a key requirement for any new device was to have a visual reference and the ability to be intuitively programmed. Hampshire FRS imposed a rigid scoring platform in order to evaluate various devices.
